Jieun Lee (1974~) is a composer and artist whose work explores the relationship between people, nature, and the ocean through music.

Working across opera, music theatre, oratorio, and film music, she transforms stories of memory, history, environment, and community into musical narratives.

Her artistic language was shaped through study and professional activity in Korea and Germany. She combines the traditions of Western classical music with contemporary sonic thinking, Korean sensibility, and the narrative immediacy of music theatre. In her work, music functions not merely as a means of expression but as narrative itself.

Her earlier works explored diaspora, memory, and historical trauma. Through the opera *Time Cobweb* and the oratorio *Martyres*, she reflected on cultural loss and human dignity. More recently, her work has focused on the relationship between humanity and nature in response to the climate crisis and changing marine environments. In particular, the opera trilogy *OPERA KALEA* reimagines sea-level rise and climate-induced displacement through mythic narratives, portraying the ocean as a living presence shaped by memory, emotion, and survival. Her ocean-themed film works have also been presented at international film festivals and global platforms.

She participates in UN Ocean Decade endorsed projects and UNESCO-IOC Blue Thread endorsed initiatives, and serves as an Artist Member of ODTIF (Ocean Data Tapestry International Forum), collaborating with scientists, educators, and policy experts. Through presentations at international forums and academic events on Ocean Literacy and marine environmental issues, she explores how art can serve as a language of empathy and dialogue, fostering new ways of understanding the relationship between people and the ocean. She is currently expanding this practice through new opera and oratorio projects that connect art, science, education, policy, and civil society.
