ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Ji Eun Lee (1974~) is a composer whose work centers on large-scale musical forms, especially opera and oratorio. In her works, narration arises from musical structure itself.

Her artistic language was shaped through study and professional activity in Korea and Germany. She combines Western classical tradition with contemporary sonic thinking, Korean sensibility, and the narrative immediacy of musical theatre and popular music.

In her music, stylistic fusion is not a juxtaposition of genres but a redistribution of musical functions. Vocal lines shape temporal progression, while orchestration forms breath, spatial density, and continuity. Repetition and suspension function as formal devices through which memory develops within musical time. Music itself takes the role of narrative.

Her earlier works address violence, loss, and remembrance as human experience. The opera Time Cobweb transforms cultural plunder and colonial trauma into a music-theatrical form. The oratorio Martyres examines sacrifice and silence through collective vocal writing and ritualized rhythmic processes.

This development continues in the opera trilogy OPERA KALEA. KALEA – BUTALSORO transforms sea-level rise and climate-induced displacement into a mythic narrative and treats the ocean as an active presence shaped by memory, emotion, and survival. Non-verbal elements such as waves, breath, and silence are organized into rhythmic and sonic structures.

Alongside her compositional work, Ji Eun Lee collaborates with scientists in projects connected to the UN Ocean Decade and related ocean initiatives. In her practice, sound creates conditions for perception and opens spaces for reflection on the relationship between human beings and the world.

Ji Eun LEE — Komponistin
