ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Minji Kim is a pianist, educator, and artistic director who integrates her profound musicality with a passionate commitment to environmental advocacy. She proudly serves as an ODTIF Artist (an Official UNESCO-IOC Blue Thread Endorsed Project) and is a Lifetime Artist member of the Deep-sea Biology Society. For Kim, music is not merely a profession, but an essential element of human survival, as vital as water or food. In an increasingly fast-paced world where classical music is often marginalized, she champions it as a living archive of human history and cultural evolution. Her artistic practice is defined by active agency; rather than remaining a passive interpreter, she is a proactive creator who conceptualizes and directs her own musical narratives.

Her musical foundation was built at Seoul National University and further refined through her Master’s studies at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim in Germany. This rigorous background informs her deep respect for the structural integrity and historical context of the classical repertoire. She firmly believes that the true beauty and depth of this music reveal themselves through understanding. Opposing the modern trend of fleeting images and short musical hooks, Kim invites audiences to experience the works of classical masters within the broader continuum of human life and academic inquiry.

To bridge the gap between the audience and the profound world of classical music, Kim actively engages in writing and lecture concerts. Through her published essays, she weaves historical context with personal insight, making the complex world of classical music accessible and deeply resonant. This proactive leadership extends deeply into her chamber music endeavors. As the director of the Gratiae Piano Trio, founded in 2013, and the representative of the Jincheon Classic Society, she conceptualizes and curates extensive projects. The trio has earned wide acclaim, consistently holding regular concerts at major venues like the Seoul Arts Center and receiving invitations to prestigious events, including performances for the Spouses' Association of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and U.S. Navy ceremonies. Currently, she is leading the trio’s "Living Composer Project," which features a dynamic piano trio reinterpretation of Max Richter's The Four Seasons, illustrating her commitment to keeping classical music vibrant and continually evolving.

Beyond the traditional concert hall, Kim is dedicated to spreading the positive influence of art throughout society. She brings the restorative power of music to the community through regular healing concerts at hospitals and nurtures the next generation of musicians as a devoted educator. Building upon her esteemed environmental affiliations, she actively works with the ODTIF (The Ocean Data Tapestry International Forum) Ensemble to translate complex issues, such as marine pollution, into artistic expression. Through this collaboration—which includes an upcoming album recording and participation in the Ocean Literacy Festival this July—Kim continually demonstrates how music can foster empathy, provoke thought, and inspire action for the world we share.
