Byeonghee KIM
Bass-Baritone
Byeonghee Kim is a vocal and performance artist who explores the ocean and the sensibilities of life in an age of climate crisis. For him, the ocean is not merely a natural backdrop, but a living stage where human desire, memory, wounds, and restoration are layered.
Through opera and voice-based performance, he translates the fading voices of marine ecosystems into human breath and resonance. His work asks how art can make the climate crisis felt, and awaken a renewed responsibility toward life.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Byeonghee Kim is a bass-baritone whose artistic work explores ethical conflict, historical memory, and questions of humanity within contemporary technological civilization. Trained in vocal performance at Yonsei University and in theology at Chongshin Theological Seminary, he integrates musical discipline with philosophical inquiry, bringing structural depth and intellectual rigor to his interpretations.
His performances are grounded not in theatrical exaggeration but in vocal density, resonance in the lower register, controlled breath, and carefully structured temporal pacing. He approaches each role as a space where value systems and worldviews collide, constructing psychological and ethical tension within the musical architecture.
In Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, he portrayed Bartolo as a figure balancing authority and vulnerability. In the original opera Yun Dong-ju and the Time Cobweb, he embodied Song Mong-gyu, articulating the tension between historical oppression and personal conviction. In Dosan, he performed the dual roles of Lee Dong-hwi and Lee Dong-nyeong, contrasting their ideological visions through vocal color and dramatic structure.
In 2025, he portrayed the AI entity Palotus 924 in Opera Kalea – Butalsoro, embodying the intersection of technological ambition and ethical contradiction. The production received international recognition for its artistic conception and performance quality, marking a significant expansion of his artistic presence.
His artistic philosophy, emerging from theological reflection yet transcending confessional language, explores responsibility, moral choice, conscience, and restoration through sound. His work structures the ethical questions and existential tensions of contemporary life into artistic form, expanding the stage into a space of contemplation and responsibility.
