The heart of the ocean floor, the pulse of Axial Seamount—deep off the coast of Oregon, USA, where the Pacific and Juan de Fuca tectonic plates diverge. Earth’s most primal breath. Piercing through the narrow fissures of an underwater volcano, this music captures the explosive eruption of hydrothermal fluids and the dramatic surging of 'black smokers.'
The violin’s brilliant high-register melodies depict the dynamic trajectories of black plumes swirling underwater and dispersing into the marine atmosphere. Powerful piano keystrokes and cascading arpeggios dramatically portray the explosive moment magma, once trapped beneath the Earth's crust, meets seawater and gushes forth.
Heavy vibrations echo the twisting and tearing of the seafloor, shaped by tens of thousands of years of tectonic movement. Through the repetitive rhythms of 'uplift'—as rock layers rise—and 'subsidence'—as the seabed collapses where magma recedes—the piece reveals the wondrous reality that giant continental plates are continuously dancing, moving a few centimeters each year.
It captures the chaotic process of creation: the head-on collision of fire (magma) and water (deep sea), where minerals crystallize and new land is born. By translating real volcanic activity data from Axial Seamount into musical motifs, scientific precision and artistic lyricism are seamlessly combined.
In solidarity, artists and scientists unite to foster a deeper understanding of our shared ocean and to translate ocean literacy into meaningful action.
